Seminary Formation and Transitory Same-Sex Attraction: A Proposal

Everyone in seminary work is aware of the Vatican’s Instruction Concerning the Criteria for the Discernment of Vocations with regard to Persons with Homosexual Tendencies in view of their Admission to the Seminary and to Holy Orders. But no one seems to know exactly what its key terms mean. As a result, the implementation of its directives has been inconsistent. This work contains a proposal for how to understand the key terms of the Instruction (transitory, deep-seated, and overcome) and how to implement its directives in a seminary’s policies and practices.

Authors: Dr. Susanne Harvath, Fr. Paul Hoesing, Dr. Ed Hogan, Ms. Jessica Kary, Fr. Jim Mason
